Hello! I’m Genevieve, but most people call me Gen by the end of a day’s work. My pronouns are she/her and I am a queer, Chinese, Singaporean woman. I've just graduated from the BA (Hons) Acting at LASALLE, into the wild wonderful world of freelancing as a theatre-person in Singapore. If you click around, you can get to know me better through some work that I'm very happy to have created or been part of.

A Good Bye (2019)
Writer and Puppeteer

A Good Bye is a two minute short situated in a window of stillness during a wake. For a little while, the pain fades into the background, and we sense the beginning of a world without the one that has passed. Such moments of clarity have sustained and grounded me during my most tumultuous and intense experiences of loss. In these moments, I remember that the world does not end. Directed and mentored by Bright Ong.

Indie-acoustic duo, The Moonhouse, started off busking along Mist Walk at MBS. Genevieve and Rachel love being great friends and having great fun. They hope to create a tiny space of warmth on the streets that people can feel in their hearts through music. Click on pics, have a listen!

CREATIVE WORK

Stories Inside and Out! A Friendship Set in Stone (2024)

Creator ( writer & director )

Three friends, Frog, Elephant, and Pig, love to have playful competitions and shared adventures. One sunny day, after an argument, Pig challenges Frog to a high-stakes race to Pulau Ubin: whoever fails to arrive by noon will turn to stone. As the race unfolds, a storm erupts, trapping them in its fury. By noon, the three friends transform into stone statues. As they turn into stone, they reflect on their shared adventures and the importance of sticking together through thick and thin. Today, visitors to Pulau Ubin can still see the stone figures of Frog, Pig, and Elephant: a timeless reminder of their adventure and friendship.Presented as part of Octoburst 2024 and Pip's Playbox at the Esplanade, 4-5 October 2024.
For families with children 3 and up.

Sunday School of Hard Knocks (2023)

Director

From being baptised as a baby to attending a Christian All-Girls' school on weekdays and Sunday school over the weekend, Miriam's whole world has revolved around the big J man in the sky. A bona fide bible verse memoriser and hymn belter, she spent much of her life as the ultimate Jesus fangirl.Until her world expands. She realises hot cartoon men make her think salacious thoughts. She realises dildos feel good actually. She realises that the woman in her school with the gorgeous shoulders and icy glare is making her feel a certain way, but she can't call it love because her church was part of a campaign supporting the banning of queer-inclusive sex education. And suddenly, she finds it hard to love a place that can't love her in return.Recounting her absurd life, from the abstinence-based sex education to the latent homoerotic tension of Singaporean girls' schools to the not-so-secret secret lesbian aunts in the family, 'Sunday School of hard knocks' is an earnest reckoning with religion and the evangelical church's growing influence in Singapore.Presented as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival 2023 at the Festival Hub: Trades Hall - Archive Room, 18-22 October 2023. Recipient of Judges' Pick Accolade.CREDITS

Lost in Transit (2022)

Chief Sound Designer

Lost In Transit is the first edition of an in-progress script by Michelle S. Tuberfield, co-created by Riznadya Lee & Melva Lee, based on their experiences as Third Culture Kids. This audio play started out as an inquiry into what happens to a child’s sense of identity and belonging when raised away from the traditional idea of “home”.Told through the semi-autobiographical narrative of three people, this work has formed around the feelings of nostalgia, isolation and loss that arise when your childhood is a constant, impromptu state of limbo.CREDITS
